Faux Beams of my Dreams!

I'm so excited to have faux beams in our main living space! It's one of those ideas I had in my head for this area since we started building the house. Luckily my husband woke up with a wild hair this past week and decided he wanted to do them... cue party dance.

Since it was *his* project with my pops, I wasn't too involved but I'm sharing any and all information I have and if you have any questions, I'll get you an answer!

First we measured the tray ceiling and divided the space evenly into three since we (I) wanted two beams heading toward the back door to draw your eyes out to the pool :). Once we had those measurements we secured an exterior 2x4x10 piece of wood where we wanted the beams to attach to, into the existing studs. To get the wood where they wanted it and secured so they wouldn't move, they made a makeshift T-shaped wedge with extra 2x4s that we were able to use the entire install process.

They built them in the garage and installed them whole rather than attaching single pieces. Using 1x4x10's we got at a local lumbar yard. They inserted several perfectly square shapes throughout the beam to make sure the beam doesn't warp and evenly fits the exterior stud they previously attached to the ceiling.

I wanted to have them look REAL, and slightly distressed but not overdone. To accomplish this, we had to miter the edges of the three pieces of wood to 45º angles so they fit like a puzzle rather than raw edges showing. Distressed them using several different techniques and then sanded it smooth. We stained the beams with Weathered Oak to give them a coastal vibe and sealed them to prevent them from shrinking or expanding with the change of temps.

Drop a comment below if you have any more specific questions, I'd love to get them answered for you! As always thank you SO much for being here!
With grace & gratitiude,
Caitlyn
