DIY Beadboard Ceiling

You know that thing that you hate about your house but you just get used to living with it? For me, that was our patio ceiling. The sky was literally falling.. the drywall sky.
Long story short, the builder of our home used a hybrid indoor/outdoor drywall for the ceiling of the front and back patio and it would just flake off. Since they won’t do anything about it, we took it upon ourselves to fix the problem.

We used beadboard & lattice to give our patio a little refresh and by golly it’s exactly what I envisioned. 👏
After lots of troubleshooting we found that our patio isn’t square. It’s 1” longer and 1” wider on one side so make the beadboard cuts were NOT easy. I think if your home is not perfectly share like ours, using single boards of wood instead of beadboard would make this project a lot easier.

My dad offered to help my husband so I took full advantage since our kids are at prime ladder climbing -and falling- age. We took advantage of the furniture being outside, had a picnic! I also used this time to wash and clean the patio furniture and cushions.

They made a t-shape “person” to hold the board up while the other used a nail gun and 2” finishing nails to secure it to the trusses in the ceiling.

Cut the boards one at a time to measure perfectly for the area you’re working with. If you have a fan or recessed light, mark with pencil where to cut and use a utility knife to cut the shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect because the base of the fan or recessed light will cover any minor flaws. We used a lattice border to do the same with the edges around the whole ceiling.

Fill nail holes with spackle or caulking, caulk the border inside and out of the lattice along with where the boards meet up.

We chose Behr Ultra Pure White exterior paint and rolled the paint on. It makes a huge difference when you paint it! 😍

Our small lanai used four beadboard slabs & four strips of lattice.
what you’ll need:
beadboard measured to space
lattice measured to space
circular saw or table saw
utility knife
stud finder
nail gun - we bought this battery Powered one
2” finishing nails
caulking
paint
roller
With grace & gratitude,
