5 simple tips to a whiter smile

So you want to know how to get sparkly whites without having to photoshop your smile in every picture. Since I’m a dental hygienist, I have a bit of inside knowledge on the subject. It may come as a surprise to you that whiter teeth is pretty simple and definitely doesn't take a rocket science, just commitment. And I won't make you quit drinking coffee or wine!

Most of these may seem redundant, but you may not know truly what a key factor it really is to keeping those pearly whites WHITE!

1. Floss daily. The harmful cavity causing bacteria that hides between your teeth also stain your teeth. If you use a whitening product, always floss before applying it.

2. Use an electric toothbrush, and brush for two minutes twice a day. NO MATTER WHAT. The toothbrush does a WAY better job than most of us. Efficiency,

3. Use whitening toothpaste. Colgate optic white is my favorite and it doesn't give me any sensitivity, remember, everyone is different.

4. Be conscious of your food choices. Wine and coffee all lead to staining so after your consumption, brush and if you whiten, I'd wait a few hours before you eat or drink them again.

5. Professional whitening: If you decide to use a professional whitening product, always remember less is more. If you use too much gel, you're probably going to burn your gums and then they're going to hurt like h-e-double hockey sticks & turn white. Definitely not what you want in your professional headshots ;) Consistency is key. Be consistent with your whitening product and start a few weeks in advance. Ask your hygienist their recommendation on which product is best for you!

BONUS TIP: Another tip I always give my patients is to use a fluoride mouth rinse or toothpaste after you whiten to prevent sensitivity.

Note: Some stains are intrinsic, from when the tooth was developing meaning no amount of topical whitening can remove the stain. See your dentist for other options!

With grace & gratitude,

Caitlyn
