3 MUST KNOW DECOR TIPS

When you‘re decorating, knowing some good ol fashioned ground rules helps make ideas flow easier, things get done quicker, and you'll be thrilled with your results. (I hope!)

Most of what I know and what I do with my own home is a reflection of my grandmother and my mother and their insight into the design and decor world... and some pinteresting too ;) Passed from one generation to the next, how cool? It’s totally a passion for the three of us - no one is by any means a professional. You may or may not already be familiar with some of these, so I hope they're not too simple. Nonetheless, they're pretty important in my opinion. So lets get to the basics, shall we?!

1. Pick a color scheme and stick with it.

That doesn’t mean a single color, just a few colors that are visually pleasing together and limit yourself to those colors. Feel free to change it up throughout the year but let color inspire you. Hues of pinks, shades of blue, neutrals, fall and summer colors or whatever tickles your fancy & curate it.

Identify your base colors in the room and work around those. Base colors are things you likely won’t change often like rugs, curtains, light fixtures, shelving units, furniture etc. For instance, my light fixture and shelves are both a white washed wood along with parts of my dining table so I always use white, or wood as my base and build around it.

2. Layering and mixing materials. Adding different textures keeps things interesting. I love woven fabrics, combining metals and wood and of course my ever beloved stoneware. Drape fabric or tea towels on a surface for easy layering pieces that are pleasant to the eye (& child friendly!) Sometimes less is more, depending on your style. Start minimal and slowly add.

3. The rule of 3’s: As a general rule, when decorating with objects that you like, are attracted to or most importantly, make you HAPPY, you need to cluster these in groups of three. Almost any three objects can work, although I generally prefer a similar color scheme, and what’s more important than color is sizing. Different heights and sizes draw your eyes to the focal points. So stick to odd numbers!

Have fun and create a space that makes you happy, afterall you're the one who has to look at it everyday! Happy decorating, friends!

With grace & gratitude,

Caitlyn
